A blocked toilet can often be cleared with a plunger, but some blockages require professional equipment to fix safely.
A blocked toilet is one of the most common plumbing problems in Australian homes. Before you panic, here's what you should know.
What you can try first
A good quality toilet plunger (the cup-shaped type, not the flat type) can often clear a simple blockage caused by too much toilet paper or a foreign object near the top of the trap. Place the plunger over the outlet hole, ensure a good seal, and pump firmly 10-15 times. If the water drains away, you've cleared it.
What NOT to do
Never use chemical drain cleaners in a toilet — they can damage the porcelain and the rubber seals in your cistern. Don't use a wire coat hanger as it can scratch the porcelain. And never flush multiple times if the toilet is already blocked — this will overflow the bowl.
When to call a plumber
If plunging doesn't work after a few attempts, or if the toilet is backing up into the shower or bath (which indicates a blockage further down the sewer line), you need a professional. Pinky's Plumbing uses professional drain machines and water jetters to clear stubborn blockages safely and effectively.
Prevention
Only flush toilet paper — never wet wipes (even "flushable" ones), cotton buds, dental floss, or any other items. These are the most common causes of blocked toilets and sewer lines.
