Warning signs of a hidden water leak
Your water bill has increased significantly without any change in usage. This is often the first sign of a hidden leak.
You can hear water running when all taps are off. Turn off all appliances that use water and listen carefully — if you can hear water moving through your pipes, you likely have a leak.
Damp or discoloured patches on walls, ceilings, or floors. Mould or mildew in unusual places. Soft or spongy floorboards. These are all signs of water accumulating where it shouldn't be.
Your water meter is moving when everything is turned off. Turn off all water in your home and check your water meter — if the dial is still moving, water is escaping somewhere.
The meter test
Turn off all water in your home (including the dishwasher and washing machine). Note the reading on your water meter. Wait 30 minutes without using any water. Check the meter again — if the reading has changed, you have a leak.
